Trump's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

This widening economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
