The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent honors show draws close, you'll find a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
