Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's side into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on target, the manager opted for the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had netted just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.

The Toffees: The team travel to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.
