"Any idea when you're speaking to the band?" a message arrives. "My request was to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There's just a key snag: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are far from alone. Several celebrated fans have also coveted the position.

The evidence suggests something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the greatest bands, they're a close unit. Their videos often feature them walking in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such pure joy you inevitably think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the greatest compliment. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate young girls to make music."

"So anyone is invited to be the next Haim sister."

Grammy Recognition

The trio are speaking from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in the running for the prize.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the honor resonates with the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the women that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The album came out of a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that odd transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The lyrics follow endings and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they are becoming.

"I love summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to actively work on ignoring the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That recent confidence called for a new sound – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drums.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The band's honesty inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic horror stories.

Someone ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Path

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their standing in the music world.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.

But Haim will always be their number one commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was four," shares Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
